The Woodlands LearningRX Offers Tips to Avoid Holiday Brain Drain

THE WOODLANDS LEARNINGRX OFFERS TIPS TO AVOID HOLIDAY BRAIN DRAINTHE WOODLANDS, TX – Even a two or three week break from school can put a serious dent in learning.

When children take a vacation for the holidays, children can experience a decrease in material retention, according to Kim Bellini, owner and director of The Woodlands LearningRx.

To keep a child’s brain strong when school is out of session, Bellini gave the following tips:

1. Get moving. Exercise is not only good for the body; it also benefits the mind. Yoga is an exercise that incorporates the practice of meditation, which has been shown to be very beneficial to the brain. “Increasing oxygen flow to the brain helps increase its performance, and time spent playing sports or bike riding is time away from the TV,” Bellini said.

2. Play board games. There are plenty of fun games to engage brains of any age, Bellini said. From jigsaw puzzles to strengthen attention and visual processing skills to games for two, like Battleship or Connect 4, or for families, like Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit, that work multiple cognitive skills. Build a family tradition on a board game – and boost the brain.

3. Eat healthy. Junk food can actually muddle the ability to focus, think and stay alert, Bellini explained. “Healthy foods like beets, berries, lentils, salmon and walnuts, can increase clarity, memory and focus,” she added.

4. Keep reading. Leisure reading can keep kids in the habit and help them increase their processing speed.

5. Play school. Fake it ‘til you make it! Give children plenty of supplies, a space of their own and invite over a couple classmates. It’ll keep them busy in a way that does not drain the brain.

Creating fun ways to build cognitive skills is one of the key objectives of The Woodlands LearningRx, a brain-training center that offers one-on-one programs to transform a student’s ability to learn at a core level.
