Be An Angel Offers Complimentary American Sign Language Class with Sheila Johnstone

BE AN ANGEL OFFERS COMPLIMENTARY AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

Houston, TX – Be An Angel will offer a 10-week American Sign Language class beginning Monday, October 7th, 2013 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at T.H. Rodgers Elementary, 5840 San Felipe Road, Houston, Texas 77057.

The Be An Angel American Sign Language class is designed to teach beginners the basics of American Sign Language throughout 10 consecutive weeks and is offered to the public at no cost.  Sheila Johnstone, who is proficient in American Sign Language (ASL 5), will teach the class.

T.H. Rogers Elementary is home to the Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of HISD, and Be An Angel felt that offering this class at a central location for any member of the local community would bridge the gap between the profoundly deaf and the community itself.  “We are thrilled to have with us Sheila Johnstone, who is one of the leading teachers for ASL here in Houston.  It is important for family members of profoundly deaf and the community to understand the communication barriers that are faced daily.  Many times, we find that children can only communicate to their deaf peers at school because nobody in the home or outside of their schooling can sign.  This also includes prospective employers once the children are able to work.   Be An Angel wants to not only create awareness for these challenges, but also improve the quality of life for the profoundly deaf,” said Marti Boone, Be An Angel’s Executive Director.

To register for this class or for more information go to www.beananangel.org or contact Marti Boone at Marti@BeAnAngel.org or call 281-219-3313.
